Ultraperipheral Collisions at RHIC and LHC

چکیده
A brief introduction to the physics of ultraperipheral collisions at collider energies is given. Photon-hadron (proton/ nucleus) and photon-photon interactions can be studied in a hitherto unexplored energy regime. 1 Some features of Ultraperipheral Collisions (UPC) Photon-photon and photon-hadron interactions can also be studied in hadron-hadron collisions [1]. This may be surprising since in general such collisions are dominated by strong interactions between the hadrons. However, by choosing collisions with large impact parameter b (or, equivalently, small momentum transfer) one can suppress these strong interactions. The time-dependent electromagnetic field of a fast moving charged particle can be thought of as a spectrum of (quasireal, or equivalent) photons [2], see Figure 1. The determination of the equivalent (or WeizsäckerWilliams) photon spectrum corresponding to a fast particle moving past an observer on a straight line path with impact parameter b is a textbook example [3]. The probability P (b) of a specific photonhadron reaction to occur in a collision with an impact parameter b is given by P (b) = N(ω, b)σγh(ω), where σγh is the corresponding photoproduction cross section. The equivalent photon spectrum can be calculated analytically, a useful approximation for qualitative considerations is

The Qcd Pomeron in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions: Iv. Photonuclear Production of Vector Mesons
The photonuclear production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the QCD color dipole picture, with particular emphasis on the saturation model. The integrated cross section and the rapidity distribution for the AA → V AA (V = ρ, ω, φ, J/Ψ) process are computed and theoretical estimates for scattering on both light and heavy nuclei are given for energi...

In this work the double vector meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the BFKL approach. The integrated cross sections and event rates for the processes AA → V1V2AA (Vi = ρ, ω, φ, J/Ψ,Υ) are computed and theoretical estimates for scattering on both light and heavy nuclei are given for energies of RHIC and LHC.
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics with the ATLAS Detector
Soon after the LHC is commissioned with proton beams the ATLAS experiment will begin studies of Pb-Pb collisions with a center of mass energy of √ sNN = 5.5 TeV. The ATLAS program is a natural extension of measurements at RHIC in a direction that exploits the higher LHC energies and the superb ATLAS calorimeter and tracking coverage. At LHC energies, collisions will be produced with even higher...
متن کاملDouble Meson Production in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions
The double meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ions collisions is addressed, focusing on the particular case of ρ J/Ψ from two-photon reactions. The cross section at photon level is obtained using distinct parameterizations for the gluon distribution on the light meson. The resulting estimates for the nuclear case are presented and discussed. As a by product, we estimate the double ρ prod...
متن کاملPhysics Opportunities in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions at Lhc
Due to coherence, there are strong electromagnetic fields of short duration in very peripheral heavy ion collisions. They give rise to photon-photon and photon-nucleus collisions with high flux up to an invariant mass region hitherto unexplored experimentally. Photon-photon and photon-hadron physics at various invariant mass scales are discussed. Due to the very strong electromagnetic fields th...
